Snoring

Snoring is defined as “unwanted sound (noise) associated with vibration of upper airway tissue during sleep.” Snoring is caused by diffuse vibrations or fluttering of pharyngeal tissues during sleep. The three necessary conditions for snoring are vibrating tissue, airflow limitation and sleep. The health consequences of snoring range from none to severe sleep disturbances with morbid consequences, in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

Reported in up to 50% of people, snoring is a common symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Not all people who snore have OSA, but virtually everyone with OSA snores.

Therefore, it is recommended to evaluate everyone that snores to determine if they have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Snoring Solutions

For those that suffer from severe snoring there are a lot of options for treatment. One of the most popular treatment options for snorers is oral appliance therapy. OAT treatment can be considered a type of snoring mouth guard that helps the patient to dramatically reduce snoring, or may even eliminate snoring all together.

Before you can be fitted for an oral appliance therapy mouthpiece you need to be evaluated by us at Dr. Walter Heidary General Dentist.

Other solutions for snoring can be found on various different types of surgeries such as: Adenoids and Tonsil surgery, Palatal Implants, Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and Laser Assisted Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (LA UPPP).

You will most likely need to participate in a sleep study to help determine the severity of your snoring issues. Consult with Dr. Walter Heidary General Dentist to find out which snoring solution is right for you.
